How much work is enough work?

I am really interested in productivity, across all of my life - from my admin to my audiobook recording. I started my career as a lawyer (in the early 90s) and even back then, I had this instinct that working silly long hours was not effective or fruitful and it certainly wasn’t joyful!
So, it is brilliant to read about evidence that short bursts of focused activity followed by long periods of rest and play appears to be the way to live a happy and productive life. This article from the Ness Labs concludes that around 4 hours of creative work a day seems to be optimal.
When I reflected on this, I realised that 4 hours audiobook recording a day seems to be the sweet spot for me. It means I do enough to make meaningful progress but I also have plenty of rest and get to do other things with my day, that don’t involve sitting still in a vacuum-sealed box!
